Comic Submission - Comics Project

FYI, this Comic Submission - Comics Project is an article that was born the first time from Misskomik Workshop Manga that will continue to be creative giving an useful information for a Wannabe Mangaka/Comic artist!

Starting the topic, Misskomik needs to remind that different publisher might have different requirements for accepting in Comics Submission. For example :
-Filled a registration form.
Misskomik opinion is, that's a part of anticipation just in case you sending your Comic samples to the wrong address. The publisher will be able to confirm you if they haven't been received.
There are various ways for the Publisher in providing the form, can be taken from the published comic book or from their website
-Determine your comic style
Because certain publishers have their own comic styles. For example, the appearance of comics full Black-White(sample publisher re: On Comics), Raster (manga), Color (Webtoon.com).
-Different Bleed sizes.
-Require different amount of page your comic sample (min.5 - max.1 Chapter).
To find out, visit the Publisher website!

Continue to the main topic ~

COMICS PROJECT FOR PUBLISH BOOK-PRINTING

TRADITIONAL WORK

Differentiate the work of the page for Comic and also for Narration, Text-boxes, Sound Effects.
Later the Editing-Publisher section will upgrade your Comic into a digital version for the book printing process. Same for setting the type of Font narration. Therefore 'very highly recommended', for Sound Effects & Text-boxes are made by your own original/traditional creation. So later the  Publisher doesn't need to make changes to that part. Essential of original/traditional creation should be adding a value to the art in your Comic Work.

DIGITAL WORK

APPLICATION (SOFTWARE)
There are a variety of application options (software) to draw your Comic/Manga such as Manga Studio-EX, SaiTool, Computone, Photoshop Illustrator, etc, that provide adequate features (tools) for drawing.
Some applications (software) may not (variety or even none) provide additionally for Pattern, Tone, Effect, Text-boxes. But it can be managed with alternative ways.
Please ask directly to the Misskomik for the above, in the comments column ~

SET MULTY PAGES/LAYER FOR 1 COMIC PAGE
Differentiate the work of the page for Comic and other for Narration, Text-boxes, Sound Effects.

LETTER (FONT)
-For normal narratives use the Font 'Lafayette - Comic Pro' 10 Points.
-The Font for Sound Effects for each scene, (same as traditional work) better made by your own original/traditional creation. Essential of original/traditional creation should be adding a value to the art in your Comic Works.

COMIC LAYOUT (USING PHOTOSHOP)

-When creating a New Page (New File) and also when you do the Scan part, set both with a resolution 600 DPI (not 300 DPI! So that your image quality is flexible for small or large size printing processes).
-If the drawing application(software) you working on too slow when applying 600 DPI on the whole page, the options is, do 'each Panel' on a separate file. After the entire drawing of 1 page done complete, then you can set all back together in 1 page and file.
-Save the File(Save As) in TIFF format (don't JPG! Avoid the risk of your image file will be worse than the original).

COMICS DRAWS ON PAGE/PAPER A4

Note 1: A4 usage generally for comic sizes Doujinshi. The definition of comics that you print/publish yourself, not the scale of apublisher. Professional comic artists prefer A3 paper size, or Japanese B3 paper size. If you prefer that one, when your submission is accepted, discussed this to the publisher about the right size.
Note 2: This Margin Size applies to both Manual and Digital Comics. The size for determinant (see example of comic paper image below) is 'left side of the page'. Less or more in 'the right side of the page', it will be adjusted depends on the size from the publisher.

PAPERWEIGHT SIZE
-For comic sketches, search for the thinnest paper. Size weight below 100gsm. To be easy when doing the 'tracing' part.
-For inking paper, search for paperweight with size above 200gsm.

BLEED-PASKRIS

-Definition of Bleed boundary is the area of your drawings.
-Paskris is the cut edge of the comic area that will be used for the printing process.
-If the publisher asks for the Bleed 19x26cm, then the Paskris size is reduced (by the publisher) 2-4cm from the Bleed limit to 18.8x25.8 - 18.6x25.6cm (see the details of the sample image above).

ADHESIVE/GLUE
Usually 1cm (observe your comic book).
Avoid placing panels that have important points on this side, because there is a possibility of being cut-off.

THICKNESS / PANEL THICKNESS
Generally, the size of the panel thickness is 15cm or adjusts the need for every scene. Frame/panel thickness depends on a scene, or you as the artist, or min 0.4mm - max 0.7mm.

THE PROCESS OF SENDING COMICS WORK

There are 3 ways that Publisher might open an option on how to deliver your comics work to be submitted.
1. For those who don't have the computer tools, send a copy of your comic sheet. Not the original comic page!
2. Format (Burn File) in the form of DVD (not FlashDisk).
* Skip if the publisher provides Comic Works Submission submission services via email.
3. Via Email.

  • For step 3, first file must have been compressed. Use an Image Compression application, so that the file size becomes as small as possible to speed up data transfer. Misskomik uses 'tinypng.com' dan 'compressjpeg.com', using it must be connected to the internet. If you prefer an Offline, there is many Image Compression Tool software you can download.
  • If your comic settings style is all Black and White, you can use the LZW or ZIP storage application. If the comic settings Style Manga (raster/tone needs a maximum capacity), use only the ZIP storage application. With this way, you can send all your drawing sample & etc wrap in 1 file.
  • Then, sent that LZW/ZIP file via email.
Above steps, ultimate reduce time & data transfer.

PROPER OF COMICS WORK

Every comic page must be properly ready to be published as a comic that you find in bookstores; Comics work is no longer in the form of a Sketch Panel even though they are neat. Comics have been given neat without stains. Decorated with Tone-Pattern-Shading (the Tone-Pattern not required if your style is Black-White comic).

(•̀o•́)ง So let's start preparing your comic works!
